Vital Strategies-Supported Road Safety Campaign Wins Bronze at International Safety Media Awards

Three government road safety campaigns recognized at Safety 2022 conference

December 7, 2022 (Adelaide, Australia) – Every year approximately 1.3 million people are killed on the world’s roads. Yet, progress against road injury and death is possible in every country. That’s the core tenant behind three road safety campaigns which were recognized today at the International Safety Media Awards (ISMA) at the 14th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety in Adelaide, Australia. Ghana’s “Surgeon” campaign received a Bronze award, while Salvador, Brazil’s “Doctor” campaign received an Honorable Mention recognition and Bogotá, Colombia’s “Juan’s Story” campaign was an award finalist. Each campaign was in the High Budget Campaign category, which included campaigns with over U.S. $50,000 in funding.

“Effective campaigns are a critical part of road safety interventions to reduce unnecessary crashes and injuries,” said Sandra Mullin, Senior Vice President at Vital Strategies. “Poignant, research-driven media campaigns, in conjunction with strong enforcement, have proven effective in changing behavior as it relates to speeding and other critical issues around the world. Vital Strategies is proud of the campaigns recognized at this year’s International Safety Media Awards, and proud of the governments we partner with for their commitment to saving lives.”

Vital Strategies partners with governments to develop and implement best-practice interventions to prevent traffic crashes, injuries and deaths around the world. This includes strategic communication, such as mass media campaigns, to change road behavior, raise the profile of road safety as a public health issue and build support for strong road safety policies.

The three campaigns earning awards are:

  • Bronze: The Ghana National Road Safety Authority’s “Surgeon” campaign, which ran in 2021 to address pedestrian safety and speeding.
  • Honorable Mention: Transalvador’s “Doctor” campaign, which ran in 2021 in Salvador, Brazil, to address speeding among motorcyclists.
  • Finalist: The Secretary of Mobility of Bogota’s “Juan’s Story” campaign, which ran in 2021 and shares the testimonial of Juan Carlos, a young motorcyclist that lost his girlfriend and his leg because of speeding.

The International Safety Media Awards has recognized high-quality safety media from around the world since 2006.

In 2020, Vital-supported campaigns in Bogotá won ISMA Gold and Bronze recognitions in the Short Video category. In 2018, Vital Strategies received the ISMA Evaluation Methodology and Outcomes award alongside eight city-led  campaigns which won awards across two categories.
